Kogi Governor Appoints UK-Based Health Expert, Alhaji Abdulfatai Usman, as SSA on Health Matters



In a significant move aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in Kogi State, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has appointed Alhaji Abdulfatai Usman, a renowned occupational health consultant and dual Nigerian-British citizen, as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Health Matters.


The appointment is part of the state government’s broader strategy to reform and reposition its health sector to meet global standards through expert-led policy implementation, preventive healthcare initiatives, and strengthened institutional capacity.


Alhaji Usman comes into the role with an impressive resume, boasting over 36 years of professional experience in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He has held senior roles at prestigious UK institutions, including Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Leicester Community Hospital, and Blackpool Victoria NHS Trust. In these capacities, he led critical initiatives on disease prevention, workplace safety, staff development, and infection control.


He is the founder and director of AFUS Occupational Health Consulting Ltd, UK, where he has consistently provided strategic occupational health solutions and risk management frameworks across multiple sectors.


Alhaji Usman’s academic background includes a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Law and Ethics from Anglia Ruskin University and a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Health from Brunel University, London. He is also a licensed Registered Nurse, with his initial training obtained from the Kwara State School of Nursing.


A proud indigene of Kogi State, his earlier career in Nigeria saw him serve as Head Industrial Nurse at Nigerian Breweries Plc and as Nursing Supervisor at Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. His professional journey reflects a long-standing commitment to improving workplace health standards and public health education.


Reacting to his appointment, Alhaji Usman expressed gratitude for the opportunity and reaffirmed his dedication to deploying his global expertise and local understanding to improve healthcare access, health policy implementation, and disease prevention in Kogi State.


Observers and healthcare stakeholders have hailed the appointment as a forward-thinking step by the Ododo-led administration. Many believe that with Alhaji Usman’s wealth of experience and deep knowledge of health systems and occupational safety, the state is poised to witness tangible improvements in its healthcare outcomes.


He is expected to support the Honourable Commissioner for Health and other relevant stakeholders by working closely with them in shaping policy directions, supporting outreach programs, enhancing health surveillance, and promoting institutional best practices for health risk management
