Rep. Halims Okays New States Creation, Says Nigeria Is An Indivisible Entity Joined By Divinity, As He Allays Divisional Tensions

The Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives and Member Representing Ankpa, Omala and Olamaboro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Halims, has affirmed that Nigeria remains an indivisible and inseparable entity, divinely joined together by God, and cannot be disintegrated on account of the ongoing agitation for the creation of new states.

Hon. Halims made this declaration during his participation at the National Public Hearing on Constitution Alteration Bills, convened by the House of Representatives at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The well-attended event brought together lawmakers, constitutional experts, political stakeholders, and civil society leaders to deliberate on various proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Speaking passionately, Rep. Halims described the creation of additional states not as a threat to national unity but as a strategic move to deepen democracy, strengthen federalism, and bring governance closer to the people. He explained that the establishment of new states would fast-track rural development, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the productivity of local economies by virtue of an expanded government architecture, which would naturally attract increased budgetary allocations and infrastructure investments.

> “Nigeria is divinely knitted together as one nation and no amount of constitutional amendment or state creation can undo what God has joined. Rather, the creation of more states will foster inclusivity, reduce agitation for marginalisation, and accelerate the even spread of development,” he asserted.

Proudly identifying himself as the sponsor of the bill for the creation of Okura State at the House of Representatives, Halims commended the Okura State Creation Committee for presenting a robust and legally sound framework during the public hearing. He lauded their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to the cause, while assuring his constituents and the Nigerian public that he would deploy his legislative capacity and political goodwill to ensure the realisation of Okura State.

It will be recalled that, in addition to presenting a bill in 2024 to alter the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide for the creation of Okura State, Rep. Halims also chaired a House constitutional conference in Minna, Niger State, where he again gave firm backing to the proposal and hit the gavel in support of the new state.

Halims further stressed that the push for Okura State and other proposed states is not a secessionist agenda but a progressive step towards equity and fair representation, noting that balanced state creation remains a vital tool for ensuring political stability, social justice, and national cohesion.

In his closing remarks, the Deputy House Leader called on stakeholders across Nigeria—traditional leaders, political actors, and civil society—to see the agitation for new states as an opportunity to strengthen the federal system, reduce regional tension, and deepen the unity of the country.

> “This is not about dividing Nigeria; it is about building a stronger federation where every group feels recognised and empowered. Our diversity is our strength, and with divine guidance, Nigeria will continue to stand as one indivisible nation,” he affirmed.
