COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF THE STATE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (SEC) OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS (ASUSS), KOGI STATE CHAPTER, HELD ON 6TH AUGUST 2026

The State Executive Council (SEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Kogi State Chapter, held its meeting on Thursday, 6th August 2026, to deliberate on issues affecting secondary education, the welfare of teachers, and the general development of Kogi State. After exhaustive deliberations, the Council resolved as follows:


1. Commendation of the Kogi State Government
The Council commends His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, for the appreciable efforts of his administration in improving the security architecture of the state and for the positive disposition shown towards the welfare of workers. 

The Council particularly acknowledges the government's commitment to maintaining industrial harmony and creating an enabling environment for public servants to discharge their responsibilities.


2. Incessant Attacks on Schools
The Council expresses deep concern over the recurring attacks on schools and educational communities in parts of the state.

 These unfortunate incidents pose serious threats to the safety of teachers, students and other education stakeholders, while undermining effective teaching and learning.


The Council calls on the Government to strengthen security around schools by adopting practical and sustainable measures, including improved security surveillance, enhanced collaboration with local communities, prompt intelligence gathering, and rapid response mechanisms to ensure that schools remain safe spaces for learning.
3. Restoration of the 27.5% Teachers' Special Allowance
The Council passionately appeals to the Kogi State Government to restore the payment of the 27.5% Teachers' Special Allowance (TSA) to secondary school teachers. 

The allowance was introduced following a duly negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement between ASUSS and the Government after a successful industrial action and was intended to recognize the peculiar responsibilities and challenges associated with the teaching profession.


Its discontinuation some years ago has imposed additional hardship on teachers. 

The Council therefore urges the Government to restore the allowance as a demonstration of its commitment to improving teachers' welfare and strengthening the education sector.
4. Enrollment into the State Health Insurance Scheme
The Council commends the Kogi State Government for introducing the State Health Insurance Scheme, which has the potential to significantly improve access to quality healthcare for workers and their families.
However, the Council notes with concern that some members are yet to enroll in the scheme.

 All secondary school teachers are therefore urged to complete their enrollment without delay so they can fully benefit from the programme and reduce the financial burden associated with medical care.
5. Payment of Gratuities
The Council expresses dissatisfaction with the piecemeal payment of gratuities to retired workers. While appreciating the Government's efforts to address the backlog, the Council appeals for the payment of gratuities in more substantial and reasonable batches to enable retirees particularly teachers enjoy the fruits of their years of dedicated service with dignity.
6. Acute Shortage of Teachers
The Council expresses grave concern over the alarming shortage of teachers in public secondary schools across the state. The situation has resulted in excessive workload for available teachers, reduced instructional effectiveness and compromised educational quality.


The Council therefore renews its call on the Government to urgently recruit qualified teachers to fill existing vacancies and adequately staff public secondary schools throughout the state.

7. Provision of Motorcycle Loan Scheme
The Council appeals to the Kogi State Government to introduce a motorcycle loan scheme for secondary school teachers, particularly those serving in rural and hard-to-reach communities. 

Given the rising cost of transportation occasioned by the removal of oil subsidy, such an intervention would greatly improve teachers' mobility, punctuality, productivity and overall welfare.


8. Commitment of Members
The Council appreciates the resilience, dedication and professionalism consistently demonstrated by members despite the prevailing economic realities and challenging working conditions. Members are encouraged to remain committed to their statutory responsibilities, uphold the highest ethical standards, and continue giving their best in the service of the state and the nation.
9. Assurance of Continued Partnership


The Council reiterates the Union's commitment to constructive engagement with the Kogi State Government and other stakeholders in the education sector. ASUSS remains a responsible partner in the development of education and assures the Government of its continued support, loyalty and unwavering determination to contribute meaningfully towards building a stronger, safer and more prosperous Kogi State through quality secondary education.
The Council expresses optimism that the concerns highlighted in this communiqué will receive prompt and favourable attention in the overall interest of teachers, students and the people of Kogi State.

Ukomu Igala Organization Lokoja Chapter has elected New Executive Officers  to run it's affairs for the next years with a call to be united for the progress of the organization. In a message to the inauguration ceremony in Lokoja, the  National Leader of the organization,  Retired Major General J.A Ataguba said the Ukomu Igala was idea borne out of conviction to ensure development closer to the people  of Igala kingdom .
